I really want to go and stay here

Ariara Island is available for rental from $US295 a person a night for a party of 15-17 guests. This includes exclusive occupation of the entire island, staff, all meals, two dives a person a week and use of water-sports equipment (30-metre trimaran, 10-metre speedboat, two jet-skis, dive boat, kayaks, windsurfers, water-skis, wakeboards, fishing and snorkelling gear). Drinks and fuel are not included.

But for a backpacker like me the price is way too expensive. Maybe someone will invite me for an all expenses paid one month stay?

Check it out here.

Speed boat first class

More than once you will travel by boat between islands in the Philippines as it is the only means of going between most islands. Sometimes its nice to splurge and go first class. As you will see in the video first class is not always how we in Europe define ‘first class’. The boats are very old and not that sturdy. Every single seat and space in the boat is occupied by either a person or a package or chickens. In first class there was a TV but only the sound worked so we got to listen to a movie. There are emergency exits but most are bolted shut.

Here are pics from another boat ride we took to coastal town. As the boat was already full when we embarked we had to sit on the side of the boat. To give us some comfort they pulled a plastic cover over our heads. This proved to be worse as there was no air under the cover. We removed the cover and instead enjoyed the scenic ride.

Party with the locals on Siargao island

Every Wednesday there is a party at the Ocean 101 pub and of course we had to go. My daughter had taught the local girls how to dance Hip Hop which they proudly performed in the evening.

Staying at Ocean 101 Hotel is a great deal as the price is right and its very near the famous surf spot Cloud Nine.

In the pics you can try to spot the two  lady boys.

Unfortunately the pics came out ‘dirty’ . I was using the Sony TX5 camera.

Snorkeling off Mantigue island

Snorkeling in the Philippines is equal to great joy. The water is crystal clear and there is an abundance of sea life. The coral is colorful and alive. Here are some pictures I took while snorkeling off Mantigue island near the larger island Camiguin.

Sunblock and Whitening lotion

One of the wonderful things about travelling in Asia is that we get the pool to ourselves during the sunny hours of the day. Asians hit the pool when its cloudy or after sunset. Asians want to remain pale while Westerners like to get a tan. The most sold beach products in Asia are Sunblock (factor 100), Whitening after-sun lotion and umbrellas.

Observe next time you travel to SEA.

Bees swarm airport

Swarms of bees mysteriously appeared at several air bridges at the Philippines main international airport on Thursday, briefly interrupting the boarding of passengers. The bees swarmed around the control panels of six air bridges, the mobile corridors that connect the aircraft to the terminal, preventing the operators from using the equipment. Passengers on two domestic flights were forced to board their flights using mobile stairs.

Trailsurfers head for the Philippines

We are heading for the Philippines during the months of june and july. Our trip will take us to both surf, beach, cities and villages. Be prepared for both photo and video articles from our travels.

The Philippines is the second-largest archipelago in the world, with over 7000 tropical islands, this is one of the great treasures of Southeast Asia often overlooked by backpackers.

The Bulusan volcano in the Philippines forcing thousands to flee

The Bulusan volcano in the Philippines erupted yesterday forcing thousands of people to flee their homes.

The 1,559-metre Bulusan volcano erupted mid-day, shooting a column of ash into the sky for approximately 20-minutes.  An estimated 2,000-residents were evacuated from three farming villages in the surrounding area and the government banned people from within four kilometres of the crater. Airplanes are advised to avoid the skies over Bulusan.

Bulusan is generally known for its sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions. It is one of the most active volcanos in the Philippines, and after Mayon, Taal and Pinatubo is considered the 4th most active, having erupted 15 times since 1886.
